The Sound of Silence
She was chattering incessantly, and it was all I could do not to stuff a roll into her mouth. Everyone at the table was mm-hming at the right intervals but no one was really listening. Yet still she droned on and on. My eyes have never rolled so much in one evening.
Finally, I stood up from the table and made my exit. A hush descended around me, but I paid it no heed. I didn’t care if they thought me mad or unmannered. I simply couldn’t bear to hear that bore talk anymore.
Outside, a swell of cicadas were the only sound that crashed upon my ears. I completely reveled in it. Oh to be able to hear nothing. What a glorious sound.
