NaNoWriMo Day 1

So I already talked about how to Prepare for National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for short, but I wanted this musing to be more about how I feel about tackling NaNoWriMo rather than giving advice. 

Honestly, I don’t know what made me want to do NaNoWriMo this year. In the past, I have never ever reached my word count. Which means I definitely never finished a novel in a month. But then I thought to myself, I did just finish my thesis this past december, and it took me a whole semester and I’m still not finished with the book. So maybe I shouldn’t be fixating on finishing a novel, just adding more to it. 

Okay, now that feels like something I can do. 

Well, since I already started the no-edit novella for the year and all my other WIPs require way more work and attention, I think I could handle working on my no-edit novella for NaNoWriMo. 

Thus, a 50,000 word count is out of the question. And no, I didn’t pick this number randomly. That’s usually what is preset once you sign up to do NaNoWriMo. However, the site does allow me to change the word count to a goal I could actually achieve. 

With only 30 days in the month of November, I would need to pick a word count passed on the average amount a write per day. I would like to do 30,000 but that’s 1,000 words a day and that already feels so daunting. Anything higher than 500 words per day would just be too much. So I guess that puts my word count at 15,000. 

Which feels low when I read it but honestly, that’s not half bad. I already have 13,833 written this far. And if I do the 15,000 for the month, I’ll have 28,833 words written, which is just shy of 30,000. So maybe I can finish my novella by the end of the year. 

Now that I’ve written it all out, I do feel more hopeful. Wish me luck.
