NaNoWriMo Day 30
Final day of NaNoWriMo and I wrote 599 today, making my total word count 13,703. Not quite 15,000 but nothing to sneeze at either. I still feel good because I challenged myself to do NaNoWriMo this year and I stuck with it as best I could. And that’s all I can do, my best.
Now that it is over, time for a bit of rest and relaxation, then revisions. Stay tuned for more.
Here is the excerpt from my writing today. Decided to go in a different direction, let me know what you think. Enjoy.
Since Derrick had planned their first two dates, and they were so perfect, I figured I should return the favor. But what could I possibly do to surprise Derrick? He was a literal billionaire, he could buy or pay his way to getting what he wanted. Yet there was one thing he couldn’t pay for and that was me. So what did I have to offer?
In the past, I would plan picnics for my boyfriends when I was on a budget but still needed to wow them. Although if I were being honest, Derrick didn’t seem like an outdoorsy guy. But I could be wrong. What hadn’t known each other for that long to know anything about each other.
Hmm. That gave me an idea. The only way to plan something special for him was to know him better. Twenty questions seemed juvenile but it was the best to learn about him in a short amount of time.
It was almost time for Derrick and Ralph to arrive, so I only had a few moments to plan out my questions. Should I stick to things that allude to his interests or start general and see where that went? Of course I wanted to know everything about him, but we only had a twenty minute ride. I needed to be strategic about this.
Definitely stay away from favorite this or thats. I could pick his brain about those things later. Although, judging from his wardrobe thus far, he liked dark colors, primarily grays and blue. True he wore a lot of black, because it was professional, but when he was in a really good mood, he wore more blues. When he was anxious or frustrated, he wore more gray to work.
In just the two and half weeks of working/dating him, I had his moods pegged down to the tee. Not just in his outfits but his facial expressions too. Tight lipped and flinching jaw muscles, quiet anger. Nostril flaring meant exasperation, not raging fury as I had presumed. No, if I had to guess, raging fury was eerily quiet, slitted eyes, piercing, cold stare. And happy, well, that was when he was inches from my lips, breaths mingling, hands caressing one another. There was just this twinkle in his eye that I couldn’t explain.
I knew what our next date should be. We should be alone someplace where Derrick could touch me unrestrained for as long as he wanted. Now that I had the activity, I needed the place.
No sooner had I pulled out my phone to do some googling, my black, shiny chariot came into view.
“Good morning beautiful.” Derrick smiled out the back passenger window.
“Hey yourself handsome.” I leaned in, nuzzling my nose against his.
“Ooo. PDA first thing in the morning, to what do I owe the pleasure?”
I paused momentarily. One of the rules we had was that we couldn’t display affection for one another where people could see. Even though no one from work would possibly be caught dead in my neighborhood, we couldn’t be too careful.
I tried to smile sweetly as I opened the door and got in but the atmosphere had shifted from sunny and warm to cool and cloudy. And I saw another mood of Derrick that I had yet to see, sadness. His beautiful blues looked forward, avoiding my gaze, intently focusing on the sight before him. This wasn’t just sadness, it was . . . deflation?
“Derrick.” I touched his arm.
“Sorry,” he apologized, still not looking at me.
