New Found Inspiration

New Found Inspiration

So recently, I have been reading a book that has inspired me to finish one of the novels I had already started. Honestly, I think that’s what I needed, some inspiration. What inspired me to be a writer, other than wanting to be like Sarah Dessen, was the books I read that made me believe in love and that men weren’t all bad. Of course, I loved Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but I know my skills well enough to know historical fiction is not in my wheelhouse. But romance, now that I believe I can write.

Thus, I revisited the novel Does That Work for You, an interracial, office romance about a CEO and his executive assistant falling for one another. Upon my visit, I discovered I had written six chapters, not five as I had previously thought. Although, that last chapter was unfinished. But that’s more progress than I had originally thought, so that’s good.

However, as I reading my work, I realized there were changes that needed to be made in order for the story to make sense. And that hardest thing about writing is the rewriting. The reason being is that as a writer, rewrites are necessary, but if you’re not in the right head space, you’ll end up second guessing yourself. And what should have been a simple rewrite for continuity purposes becomes a jumbled mess.

To avoid this, I decided to write down all the chapters and summarizes what is happening in each chapter. Not only will this help with mapping the story but also ensure that the writing doesn’t go all over the place.

So far, I rearranged a few parts yet ended up rewriting chapter four in the process. However, I like what I ended up with. It makes sense to the story that the characters would have these conversations earlier rather than later. While you don’t want to have certain events happen too early, it’s normal for couples to discuss things as they approach them, rather than waiting until later for dramatic effect.

While I’m not 100% sure of the novel as a whole (since I haven’t finished it yet), I like the direction it is going and think it will only get better from here.

 As always, thanks for reading.
