NaNoWriMo Day 10

NaNoWriMo Day 10

So no writing for Day 9. Went to bed early and didn’t write that day. Which is okay. When you’re tired, rest. No sense in pushing yourself and the work you do doesn’t come out well. Because today, the idea came to me and I had a good writing experience. I think it ended on a good note and will lead to some even better writing for tomorrow.

Here’s an excerpt from what I wrote today. Enjoy.

Jay, Marco, Tony and I head out the back door of the restaurant area to an outdoor shed. Jay pulled out a key and unlocked the heavy duty MasterLock, removing the chains from it. Then he opened the door to an array of lights, faux flowers, and glossy, pristine glassware.

“We only pull these out during the holidays for our best customers. But we make an exception for you and your lady,” Jay said.

I felt honored. Even though I frequented the establishment, I had never been privy to the back of the restaurant. I truly didn’t deserve this but I would not waste the opportunity. Especially if it wowed Nadia and cemented our amazing night.

Jay pulled out some crystal goblets, with lovely glass roses all around the cup and flowy vines coming down towards the stem. He handed them off to Marco, who went back inside, before pulling out the same design on glass bowls, handing those to Tony.

“Thank you for this,” I told Jay. “I could never repay such kindness–”

He waved me off. “No problem. I see the way you look at her. You look at her the way I did my wife before we got married. I see wedding for you two in the future.”

“Oh I don’t know about that.” Hanging my head.

Nadia and I struggled to get to this point. She was a nervous deer and any sudden movement could cause her to run. I understood where her hesitation was coming from but it didn’t hurt any less to know that she didn’t trust me.

“I see.” Jay nodded in understanding. “That’s why we must wow her tonight. To show her you’re the one for her.” He clamped a hand on my shoulder, shaking me from my melancholy.

“You think?” I looked up, hopeful.

“I know!” He placed his other hand on my other shoulder. “How do you think I got Antonia?”

I chuckled. “I can only hope to be so lucky.”

“You will be. Just listen to me.” He said as he led me back inside the restaurant.

Once back inside, long white candles were lit at the table with white rose petals. The twinkly lights had been removed and placed around a table in the middle of the world.

“Already, ready!” I heard Antonia yell from the back and out walked Nadia, holding the glass bowls filled with some gelato.

Jay clamped him on the back real hard, twice, before taking off past Nadia and grabbing his wife, signaling for everyone to follow him out. Nadia turned back and gave them a head nod before coming back to the table to join me.

“Hello there.” She smiled, setting the cold concoction in front of us before joining me.

“Well hello you. What do we have here?”

“Antonia said you’re one of her best customers. And she thought it’d be a good idea for me to make a signature gelato. Best way to a man’s heart,” she finished with a wink.

“Are you trying to reach my heart? Because it’s already yours.” I grabbed her hand, bringing it to my lips and giving it a kiss.
