NaNoWriMo Day 12
So I missed another day of writing and decided to write 1,000 words today and ended up writing 1,022 words today. I kind of wanted to write more but felt it best to stop so I can get ready for work tomorrow. (Boo) But I’m glad I pushed myself to make up the word count I missed yesterday. I’m almost fifty percent through my goal. So I feel like I’m ahead of schedule. As long as I don’t lose this momentum I should be good. Here’s an excerpt from what I wrote today. Enjoy.
The creeping SUV stopped and the door popped open. I wrapped the handles of my bag around my wrist and held it over my head, preparing for a beat down. I wasn’t about to get kidnapped today.
A white man in an old black suit with a sleek and shiny hat stepped out and approached me on the sidewalk. Suddenly I wasn’t worried about getting kidnapped so much as I was worried about receiving a subpoena.
“Are you Ms. Nadia Bryant?” he asked.
“I would say that depends, who’s asking, but you’re asking. So what do you want?”
A small smile crossed his lips quickly before it disappeared back into a firm line. “I have been instructed to take you to Holden Enterprises for the foreseeable future. Shall we go?” He gestured towards the car.
“Un uh! Hold up, who hired you? And why are you driving me to work? How do you know where I work in the first place?”
“All of your questions will be answered once you step inside the vehicle,” he responded.
“And if I refuse?” I countered, folding my arms indignantly over my chest. While I was a grown woman capable of handling myself and this man seemed harmless and just trying to do his job, you never knew these days. Plenty of people were pretending to do their job and took every opportunity to mistreat women. I wasn’t about to be one of them. Not today.
“You are free to decline but my employer will be calling for a report. What would you like me to tell him?”
Oh, the plethora of things I had on my mind to say to tell his employer. I needed a minute to come with a good, sharp response but my phone rang, interrupting my thoughts.
It was Derrick. Immediately my heart soared and a grin spread on my face from ear to ear. But then something else occurred to me. Why would he be calling me at this time of day? And then another thought struck me.
It could be . . . no it couldn’t . . . right
“Hello,” I answered shakily.
“Good morning Nadia. How was your weekend?”
“Fine and yours?”
“Marvelous. Now could you please get in the car.”
“What?!” I looked around, trying to see if I could see Derrick anywhere. Then I turned away from the driver, whispering angrily. “I thought we agreed you wouldn’t be picking me up from work?”
“I’m not. The company I hired will be taking you and I both to and from work.” I could practically hear his smugness through the phone.
“This was not a part of the agreement,” I hissed.
“The agreement stated that I was prohibited from using my own personal vehicle to retrieve you from your home establishment for personal reasons. This is a driving company that is picking you up for professional purposes. Besides, you are my executive assistant, no one at the office will think it’s weird that I’ve hired someone to drive us around to minimize on time waste such as driving to work. This way we can work and commute at the same time.” More smugness. “Now please, get in the car Mr. Bryant.” And with that he hung up.
