NaNoWriMo Day 22

NaNoWriMo Day 22

It’s Thanksgiving and I have a lot to be thankful for. I’m thankful I'm over 70% of the way through my novel but I’m also thankful for friends and family. So I’m going to take some time to eat and relax with the fam so I can come back even better and finish strong.

Here’s an excerpt from what I wrote today.

“I feel silly for even saying anything.” She shrugged her shoulders.

“Savs, you’re never silly to me.” I placed my hand over hers.

“I don’t know, I was really excited to meet Nadia and be a part of your romantic life. You normally don’t let me in to that side of your life.”

That’s because there was no romantic side of my life. Just some hookups here and there. But I guessed Savannah would have liked to dish the dirt with me. However, Savannah’s age was a factor in why I never did that. She was so young and I didn’t know if I could handle hearing about her sex life. But Savannah was her own woman and I needed to start treating her like one. I knew what I needed to do.

“Listen Savs, I’m sorry about how I reacted at the bar that night. I just lashed out because I was embarrassed.”

She nodded, absorbing my words.

Finally she asked, “Why were you embarrassed? She was laughing and seemed to really enjoy hearing stories about you.” She leaned against the counter, popping a whole cookie in her mouth.

“I don’t know. I guess I wanted her to think I was cool,” I replied sheepishly.

“Pfft. Nah, I don’t think she’s into cool guys. If she were, she’d never be into you.” Savannah laughed at her own joke.

“Whatever.” I plucked a chocolate chip from one of the cookies, flicking it at her.

“Hey!” She copied me, returning chocolate chips my way. “But in all seriousness, real women don’t want a guy concerned with his looks or his status in the world. Guys like that don’t care about anyone but themselves and you don’t want to be known for that, do you?”

I shook my head in the negative.

“So just be you and if she likes you, great, if not, then forget her and move on.”

Savs’s words really touched me. She seemed wise beyond her years but when I looked upon her, she was staring far off into the distance, a sadness in her eyes. Soon I realized this wisdom didn’t come without some pain. I went around the kitchen island towards my baby sister and enveloped her in my arms.

“Whoever hurt you, he didn’t deserve you. And if I ever find him, I’ll kill him,” I whispered against her auburn hair.

She giggled but it was low and lacking mirth. But it was something. I really should be a better brother.

“Now what did you want earlier?” She asked.
