NaNoWriMo Day 28

NaNoWriMo Day 28

I know I’m behind but through sneezes and a running nose, I pushed myself to write 565 words total! I wanted to reach 1,000 but the clock struck midnight and I just couldn’t do any more. And that’s okay. Something is better than nothing and the something I wrote was way better Day 28 than Day 27. I call that a win.

With that being said, I don’t think I’ll reach my word count goal of 15,000 but I will come very close. So far I have written 12,502 words total since November 1. Which is way more than I wrote the first time I did NaNoWriMo, where I only wrote a little over 7,000. So I’m happy if I stop here right now or continue and just stop shy of 15,000. Whatever happens, I’m giving myself a pat on the back.

Here’s an excerpt from what I wrote today.

A few miles later, the car stopped. Derrick gently removed my hands from my face and instructed me to wait. Since he hadn’t told me to open my eyes, I presumed they should remain shut. I heard a car door slam and custom leather shoes (I know from peeking at them earlier) scurry across what sounds like cobblestone.

Now where could we be that has cobblestone?

My door opened and one strong, warm hand wrapped around my waist while the other slipped under my legs as I was lifted out of the vehicle.

“Oh. What a gentleman.”

“Only the best for m’lady.”

I didn’t have to see his face to know he was grinning from ear to ear because I was grinning from ear to ear.

“Can I open my eyes now?”

“Oh,” he laughed. “You could have done that already. I’m sorry.” I felt him set me down on the ground.

When I opened my eyes, it was like I was transported back in time. Colorful brick and logged houses lined gray cobblestone paths and fences, smoke billowing out of bricked chimneys. Horse drawn carriages rode across the stoned streets, carrying either baked goods, hay, wood and handmade tools or ladies dressed in crisp white bonnets and plain, cotton dresses. Men walked about with wide brimmed hats shaped like church steeples and pants stopping mid calf and starch, white socks dressed with belt-buckled shoes.

To her left was a long, wooden bridge with a criss-crossed archway atop going all the way down and a white, wooden star dangling from the center overlooking a beautiful, mossy green pond. To her right were more houses and shops, advertising fresh, homemade breads, sweets, and butter as well as an array of pink, purple, and white flowers blooming everywhere.

I was truly in awe. This wonderful man had planned a day out in Old Salem. The sun was shining, the breeze was cooling but not cold, with red, orange, and yellow lives floating amongst the wind.

“This is . . . so beautiful.” I finally looked at Derrick, tears brimming in my eyes. “I love it.”

He closed the gap between us, his large hands grasping my face, long, lean fingers brushing back the tears before they threatened to fall. He leaned forward, pressing his soft lips against my forehead, pressing a gentle kiss against it. “All for you.”
