Pamuya - Unleashed
I wrote this last semester and in the excerpt, Annalee wants to have a sleepover and Pamuya comes out unwillingly and turns the place upside down. Feedback welcomed and enjoy.
Annalee POV
“Honey, I know you wish to be normal but you are still young. You don’t have a handle on your powers yet. I just don’t want something bad to happen. To them and to you.”
I pondered that for a moment. Thus far nothing seemed to happen to me. Whenever I dreamed, I felt like I was floating, having an out of body experience, watching events playout before me between Pamuya and that boy. It wasn’t until I woke up that I realized the reason I felt weightless was because I was actually floating in water. Not only had I been floating in water, apparently the scenes I thought I was seeing had been happening in the house. Thus if Pamuya attacked, there would be slashes on the walls, furniture broken, giant holes in the roof, the whole house nearly about to collapse.
Then the shaman would show up, almost out of nowhere but I knew better. They had been watching our house since sundown. They would stick their staffs into the ground and chant these words I didn’t know. A language from long ago, ancient times, back when we were one with the spirits, before our connection was severed. Or so papa told me. Then the house would begin to shake, as the water evaporated, the walls healed and coated in new paint, the ceiling holes closed up, the furniture fixed and the house fixing itself upright, as though it were a person sitting up straight.
That’s when I knew how destructive my powers were. My powers were more active at night, especially under a full moon. Thus why I picked tonight to have a sleepover, no full moon. The most that could potentially happen to me was some water flowing, and I’d just chalk it up to peeing the bed. Nothing to worry about.
“So long as you’re sure,” my father broke through my reverie. Then he left. Probably to alert more shaman.
I remembered the girls had started arriving and my father set out snacks and party games to entertain them, while my brother set up the tv. I made sure to pick movies that weren’t too scary but would be sure to keep us (mainly me) up all night. One by one, they began to fall asleep but I insisted on movie after movie.
Soon enough though, I was just as tired as the rest of the girls and I was knocked out. Next thing I knew there was screaming and cries of “I can’t swim” and “We’re all gonna drown.” But the one that struck me the most was “Was wrong with her?”
If Pamuya was actively attacking, it manifested through my body. My arms were up in the air, sending blasts of water through the room, knocking girls out in its wake. My feet were running before my hands made contact with a body, slamming it to the ground. Pamuya’s conscious registered the shaman, using my hands, she created a giant wall of water, assailing against them, sending them through the structure of the house, destroying everything in its path.
Ropes came around my body, trying to wrestle me to the ground. Pamuya fought back. Using her bare strength, my hands grabbed the ropes and ripped them from the shamans hands. I could hear my father pleading with me to stop but she persisted, roaring loudly,
“I’LL KILL YOU ALL!”
I could hear girls screaming as they ran outside the house. My father and the few shaman who weren’t trying to pin me down and chased after them. Pamuya opened my mouth and I felt a white hot heat rise in my throat before a bright laser blasted from within me. It reminded me of when you turn the knob on the hose and it shoots out this sharp stream of water. But it felt terrible.
I saw myself cutting through all the future in the living room; slicing through shaman, their screaming blood curdling; disintegrating the roof entirely; girls crying and ducking under whatever they could find; I felt like a monster.
Tears poured from my eyes, hands trembling. More ropes flew across my body, finally pinning me to the ground. Several shaman appeared before me, the elder of them breaking away from the pack. He tapped his staff on the ground and chanted some words I had never heard before.
My body felt hot, like I was in a sauna. A shrill scream escaped my lips, Pamuya crying out in agony as if her soul was being torn to shreds. After a while, I passed out from the pain.
When it was all said and done, the house and any neighboring houses or property would be restored, and the girls had their memories erased but the trauma they faced would somehow still be etched in the deep recesses of their brains. They wouldn’t know who I was, but they’d know to fear me. It was my hands that caused the damage. It was me who’d have to live with the consequences of both our actions. Thus, I never had a sleepover or any kind of birthday party ever again. Nor did I go to any. I feared Pamuya was too strong, and she would hurt someone. It was better for everyone if she never came out again.
So the shamans created a powerful seal on my back, keeping Pamuya in check. Until Ayden released her. And once again, she proved too dangerous.
